Support platform for care leavers
As has been the case in the British Isles since 2016, “Care Day” will be celebrated in Portugal for the first time on 18 February (it is marked on the third Friday of February).
This is an initiative of Plataforma PAJE – Support for Young Care Leavers, which is based in Coimbra, works nationwide, supports around 300 young adults with a history of care and seeks to improve their situation on leaving care, promoting positive transitions to independent living.
To mark this “Care Day” there will be an online event with the participation of young people with a history of care and organisations working in this field in Portugal. At the same time, all over the country, residential care homes will be invited individually to give a voice to the real experts on care – the children and young people who live there – upholding a right to which they are entitled and fostering a sense of belonging to a community that should offer security and a caring environment.
It is intended as an opportunity to open up discussion of issues concerning children and young people who have been deprived of growing up in their own family, calling for positive discrimination in favour of those who became victims early in life but have their whole lives to suffer the consequences.
