Recognising that having a secure base of emotional support to turn to, when needed, is a key component of the transition to independent living, we have seen the importance of building relationships with significant figures who can make up for the lack of a parental figure in the transition to adult life.
To that end, we propose the implementation of a follow-up programme, aimed at a fuller and better social reintegration of young people, allowing the mission of the residential care home to be extended through a fresh look at the individual and the contexts in which they live.
This model of intervention, which begins before the young person leaves, aims to help residential care homes improve the quality of their service. It benefits the young people, who receive more structured support after leaving care, and enhances the standing of the institutions that cared for them.
